Shelby Massingale
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
LCSW
My goal is to destigmatize mental health challenges by helping children, teens, and their parents understand that addressing the unmet emotional and behavioral needs within their families is an opportunity to create an unstoppable ripple effect of hope and healing. I believe that relationships within and between various communities protect people of all ages against the harm created by unequal access to healthcare
About me
Contrary to popular belief, she is not named in reverence to the (very iconic) Shelby Mustang, but rather because the sound of the name inspired her father to dream, “She shall be…” with limitless possibilities to complete this sentence. Her mother often told her the stories of why they chose her middle names which mean “cheerful” and “grace,” so a career as a helping professional was simply in the cards.
As an avid volunteer during high school, Shelby first entered the field of mental health as a peer support hotline operator for Clark County Teen Talk in Vancouver, WA. This experience cemented Shelby’s decision to pursue her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Spanish at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. In her application for U of M’s undergraduate program, Shelby indicated her interest in pursuing social work, and was granted preferred admission to U of M’s School of Social Work. As she earned her Master of Social Work degree, she completed her graduate internship at Girls Group in Ypsilanti, Michigan. There, Shelby engaged female-identifying teens with weekly individual mentorship and community support, social group activities, and creative and fun educational programming designed to promote their emotional and economic self-sufficiency.
Before joining PANW, Shelby provided mental healthcare as a school-based youth and family therapist at a community mental health agency. Her interests and training are in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-Informed Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, trauma-informed play therapies for all ages (this includes parents and caregivers!) and advocating for patients’ needs in any setting or system that is missing the opportunity to aid the patient achieve their optimal treatment outcomes. Shelby works in our Tigard and Beaverton office.
Interests
Whether she is reading a book, doing chores, or at work completing tasks between appointments, you will likely find Shelby jamming to R&B, Hip-Hop, Reggaeton, Afrobeats, or anything with a nice beat or compelling lyrics. “DJ Shelby” always welcomes recommendations!
She is also a true dog-lover. If you were to take a walk with her and pass ten dogs of various shapes, sizes, colors, and odors, she would likely squeal about how each and every single one is “sooo cute!” Her number one cutie is her energetic and cuddly Shih Tzu/Poodle mix, Prince – he even has a purple collar and harness to honor his musical namesake!
Whether it involves travel, trying new foods, or experimenting with new hobbies, Shelby enjoys novel experiences; the more spontaneous, the better! If she’s not out and about exploring the PNW and other parts of our beautiful world, then you will likely find her in her natural habitat at home, pampering herself with a facial spa mask while surrounded by her favorite comfort items.
Little known fact about Shelby: she is related to Eddie Kendricks, who was a member of the Temptations from 1960 – 1971. Her favorite Temptations’ songs are “My Girl” and their rendition of “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer.” Shelby’s favorite food of all time is Thai food, with Vietnamese food being a close second. Both countries are on her travel bucket list!
Shelby’s favorite hobby is taking an impromptu day trip to the beach. Lounging in the sand with a book or playing fetch with her pup on a sunny day at the Oregon Coast is better than striking gold!
Family
Shelby is the favorite child in her family – possibly because she is the only one! Though she was raised by her parents in Vancouver, WA, they spent many holidays, vacations, and summer breaks visiting extended family in Michigan and Alabama. Through the peaks and valleys of life that all families experience, Shelby and her parents sustained family relationships with extended relatives through regular communication and unconditional support for one another. Family, whether chosen or biological in nature, continues to be a major value that informs Shelby’s practice as a provider.
